: in 1630, boston was basically three mountains, there were very steep hills. waste would run down quickly and dump into the harbor. and the tide would carry most of it away. well, this worked well for a while. the problem was, as boston wanted to expand, it started filling in the mudflats. the water could come rushing down the hill, it would hit the flat area and slow down. at high tide, it couldn't get out at all. it got so bad that the city took over, 'cause the city has a responsibility to protect its citizens. boston built the first modern sewer system in the united states. ours was completed between 1877 and 1884. with this wonderful new sewer system, we were taking our filth and moving it out to the ocean. of course, all of this was untreated. in the 1960s, we were still pumping all of our sewage out to moon island, untreated. we would get swimmers here, never knowing, in the middle of summer, why you would have a cold. well, we were swimming in diluted sewage. melosi: the major way to deal with pollution, at least until early into the 20th century, was through the process o

? i will tell you, liz, this is the bigger story about the boston franchise and the group that runs it, run by mr. john henry. is the fact that that franchise, the fenway investment group has got some major money issues. there's no doubt about it. boston, underperforming team, big salaries, and on the other hand, that same group owns this liverpool soccer team which is essentially the mirror image of what's going on in boston, over in england, in the soccer league. which by the way, you know, english football as it's known is not an inexpensive venture. it is very expensive venture and they are spread pretty thin. we have been calling people up today trying to figure out who might be interested in the red sox. listen, it's a great franchise. they will get a lot of money. they would get probably -- the numbers i was hearing was 1.3 billion, i will get you they will get at least 2 billion. that means since john henry since buying the team a couple of years ago and going to two world series, this guy has been pretty good, would basically double his money or something along those lines.

. and that part of the opposition are two mega real estate conglomerates, boston properties and equity office. they're not the only opposite and i know that this was a coalition but those are two of the opponents and that certainly was not mentioned. there was a talk of a wall on the waterfront, without mentioning the current status of the green fence on the waterfront, without mentioning that this project, love it or hate it, will create retail and walkable space along the embarcadero. once this goes to the ballot, there will be a campaign, and the two sides will get to present both sides of the argument, the opponents will get to argue their case, the supporters will get to argue their case, and the voters will make a decision, just as this board made a decision after hearing both sides. however, the voters decide that matter, i will respect that judgment, and it will be the will of the voters, after having heard both sides and not just one side. but a signature gathering campaign that presents one side without the other does not show that this is somehow the will of the voters. the
